The Cow

The cow is a domestic animal. Everybody has seen a cow. She has four legs, two ears, two eyes and two horns. She has a long face. There is short hair on it. She has a long tail. There is a tuft of hair at the end of her tail. She drives away flies with it. Her body is covered with short hair. She has no teeth in the upper jaw. Her hoofs are divided in the middle. Some cows have no horns.

There are many kinds of cows. Some are big and some are small in size. Cows are in many colours. Some are black. Some while and some are of mixed colours. the cow is found in all parts of the world, She is a peaceful and harmless animal. She does not attack anybody, But a mother cow is very jealous. She will not allow anybody to molest her calf. She loves her calf dearly.

The cow lives on grass, hay and bran. She chewing the cud. She drinks water and gruel, the cow is the most useful of all domestic animals. Her uses are many and varied. She gives us milk. Milk is the most nutritious food for human babies. Many sweets are made from it. We get butter, cheese, curd and ghee from it. The hide of the cow makes excellent leather. Bags and many other articles are made from this leather.

We get glue from her horns. Cow dung is good manure. It is also used as a good fuel. The Ox or the Bull is used for ploughing the land and drawing the cart. Every part of the cow is useful to men. The cow is a great benefactor of mankind. The Hindus worship the cow as a deity. Still, the cow is sadly neglected We should take good care of the cow and feed her properly.


The Elephant

The elephant is the largest and the strongest of all the animals that live on land. The elephant has four legs which are as big and heavy as pillars. He has a big head. He has two ears which are as big and wide as fans. But his eyes are very small. He has a short tail. His neck is short. His skin is very hard and rough. He has two tusks. They grow outside his mouth. He has no nose. He has a long trunk. He takes a breath with it. He picks up his food with it. He drinks water with it. The elephant is generally eleven or twelve feet high. Elephants are grass-eating animals. They live on sugarcanes and banana trees.

Elephants are largely found in the thick forests of Asia and Africa. The elephants of Assam and North Bengal are famous. They live in dense forests. They live in herds. Thailand is the home of white elephants. Wild elephants are caught by hunters skilfully and brought home. They are then tamed. When tamed, they become very useful and faithful to the driver who is called ‘mahout’. They love music and are very intelligent. Wild elephants do a lot of harm to men. They destroy crops and gardens. Sometimes, an elephant goes mad.

He becomes very dangerous. Then he is killed by expert hunters. Trained elephants are very useful to us. Men ride on them. Children are very fond of such a ride in the zoo. The hunters use them for hunting. They can carry heavy loads. They can carry heavy logs of wood easily. They were also used in wars. They show clever tricks in a circus. The tusk of an elephant is very valuable. It is called ivory. Many fancy goods are made of his tusk and bones. Trained elephants are very faithful. They do a lot of service to their masters.


The Tiger

The tiger is a wild animal. He is a very ferocious animal. He is now called the king of beasts (jungle). The tiger is beautiful to look at. He is as big as a lion, but in appearance, it is like a cat. He has sharp nails in his strong claws. His eyes are large and bright. They look like balls of fire in the dark. His head is round and his ears are short. He has whiskers like a cat. He has a soft pad under his feet. His legs are very strong. His body is covered with soft hair with stripes. His colour is yellowish-brown. The leopard has a black spot all over his body. The tiger has no mane. He has a long tail.

Tigers live in hot countries. They are found in Myanmar and Malasia. The hills of Assam, Tripura and Madhya Pradesh abound with tigers. The white tigers are found in Madhya Pradesh but are very rare. The Royal Bengal tigers of the Sundarbans in Bengal are by far the largest of all. They look majestic in their appearance. They are known for their strength. The leopards are smaller in size.

The wolf is mainly found in countries like England. The tiger is a flesh-eating animal. He is cruel and bloodthirsty. He sleeps by day and hunts at night, He is more dangerous than the lion. He kills animals even when he is not hungry. Sometimes he comes to the houses of men. He carries away cows or buffaloes. The tiger is not useful to us. It does harm to man. His skin is used as a cushion or seat. His fur makes fine rugs. Trained tigers show tricks in a circus.
